Mogila, Peter

Mogila, Peter
(1597–1646)
   Metropolitan and Theologian.
Mogila was born in Moldavia and was educated in Poland and at the University of Paris. He became a monk and was elected Abbot of a monastery in Kiev in 1627. He was appointed Metropolitan of Kiev in 1633. He is remembered for his Orthodox Confession of the Catholic and Apostolic Eastern Church, in which he outlined the beliefs of the Orthodox. This was approved by the Four Patriarchs in 1643 and was endorsed by the Synod of Jerusalem in 1672. Mogila was also responsible for an important catechism. Both documents have become standard statements of the faith of the Eastern Church.
